The Bakery’s Night Out with Idea Capital Atlanta
Tucked into Midtown's residential heart is Mary Stanley Studio. Warm, welcoming, and generously decorated with art from Atlanta and beyond, the abode provided the perfect backdrop for last night’s fundraising affair.
Each year Idea Capital Atlanta hosts a ticketed event open to all community members, a party where ticket sales and additional donations go directly to the awards pool for Idea Capital recipients. More than just a good cause, the party brought together collectors, culture workers, and artists to enjoy a low-key evening full of laughter, cross-pollination, and some delicious soup while looking forward to the opportunities Idea Capital’s upcoming awards will bring.
Idea Capital Atlanta has been a self-generating funding mechanism supporting artists outside the common institution model for sixteen years. Since their inception in 2008, over $200,000 for 156 Atlanta artists has been raised.
During this years party, 2023 awardee, Majid Araim, showcased a segment of a recent operetta for partygoers before speaking on the impact receiving an Idea Capital grant has on artists working with niche ideas that don’t have many existing grants to turn to. Following speeches from steering committee members Louise Shaw, Paul Boshears, and Felicia Feaster artist Shoccara S. Marcus spoke on the power of receiving an Idea Capital grant. Shoccarra received $1,500 from Idea Capital in 2023 to produce her project Emotive Metamorphosis: From Trauma to Artistic Healing. Marcus, like Majid, remarked that it was emboldening to have validation that her concept was worth exploring and that its purpose was valuable to the community.
