Art As Queer Community Care Workshop

At The Bakery East Point with Artist Magda Dumirescu

Saturday, March 13th and/or Saturday, March 27th

This workshop series is focused on binging some of the original imagery and slogans from Atlanta ACT UP activists in the mid-1990s into a contemporary context, making queer history more accessible and celebrating the tradition of queer community care. Queer history and narratives are frequently portrayed as tragedies, which is valid, but can be difficult and overwhelming to learn about and explore. In order to help remedy this, local artist Madga Dumirescu organized a workshop to celebrate intersectional queerness by using creative expression as self-care. thus, carrying on the tradition of resistance and care in Atlanta and radical public art.

Workshop attendees upcycled fabric with spray paint, templates, and more to make large signs celebrating queer community, acceptance, and love. They also walked away from the workshop with an educational zine to learn more about the ACT UP movement.
