For more than ten years, Smith has illustrated overheard conversation-fragments every day and posts the drawings on social media—his own version of an analog Tweet. The Bakery Atlanta will celebrate You Look Like The Right Type’s tenth anniversary by showcasing 350 drawings from the archive of more than 5,000. This will be the first-ever solo exhibition of the series.

By capturing and drawing actual words spoken by real people, Smith aspires to make permanent and concrete what would otherwise be merely temporary. When multiple drawings are clustered together, the text-based fragments transcend time, place, age, and gender to become new conversations between people who have never met or exchanged words. The audience continues the conversation by reading that which was once spoken and making their own associations between text, image, and what's left unsaid.

The January 3 opening reception coincides with a book release and signing of We Have Re-Energized Our Twitter Account, a limited-edition artist’s book which includes 100 drawings. Smith’s book has been acquired by museum collections and library archives, including Smithsonian American Art + National Portrait Gallery Artists’ Books Collection, Brooklyn Museum Artists' Books Collection, MoMA Franklin Furnace, The Center For Book Arts in New York, Yale Special Collections, and the Frances Mulhall Achilles Special Collections at the Whitney Museum of American Art. Limited copies will be for sale.
